The great trees of Mamre  was a special place where Sarah and Abraham would go to reconnect with God. It was a place of contemplation, reorientation and consolation. Having reconnected with God, they found themselves ready to offer hospitality to the three heavenly visitors, to receive blessings, promises of new life and even laugh at the strangeness of it all. What a powerful paradigm for us to imagine for ourselves in our day to day lives. God longs for each of us to have our own sacred place of meeting like the great trees at Mamre. He longs for us to be wide awake to the divine encounters that await us each day.

I can imagine sitting there in front of the tent. The sun high above and feeling the heat of the day. In the distant background I hear the sound of cattle steering about. Maybe in the tent Sarah is moving about doing her day to day task. As I look at the ground I feel a presence beside me. I look up and see three visitors standing there. What a feeling that must have been to know that God was there beside you. Not other humans but God the creator. A physical God talking to you in human form. I doubt that any of us could imagine the feelings that rushed through Abraham while in the presence of God.

God is present in our lives everyday. How fortunate to those SPECIAL PEOPLE who had God’s presence around them in the old and new testaments!!
